 Description
This was recorded in my very controlled studio room. Small room, 11x17x7.5, dead ceiling and most walls, tile floor. Actually made for pretty punchy drums. These Cascade Fatheads were placed as a spaced pair, about 24" over and slightly in front of the cymbals, equidistant from the snare, facing downward. No pictures, sorry. I didn't originally plan to do this as a sample.

I'd like to hear a little more sparkle in the overheads, but I suppose the cascade FAThead ribbons are not really famous for air and sparkle. These have a nice fat sound and bring out the drums rather than the cymbals, which can be nice if you only have 3 or 4 mics on the kit. Still...a couple Shure SM57s can give you similar results, and I like to hear a little more high frequency detail than this.

Hi Greg,

Generally I agree, however the songs that I ended up tracking that day both benefitted greatly from this setup

In my small room brighter overheads didn't cut it too much. In my new house with a much larger tracking space, the fatheads didn't work at all as OH's.

I listened to the recordings in the two links. I like them, but I'd still prefer to hear a little more high frequency detail in the cymbals. I don't like overly bright and harsh cymbals either, but these cymbals seem just a bit dark and muffled to me. Seems like I'm hearing more air in the guitar and vocals than the cymbals.... I don't know. I realize it's just a style thing, and I know a lot of folks love ribbon mics as drum overheads. And as you mentioned, it depends greatly on the room you're in. The better the room, the more you want to capture the little nuances. What are you using for overheads in your new room?

Yes, it's definitely a stylistic thing. I wanted a darker sound, without a doubt. In the new house I'm back to using my Studio Projects B1 pair. I prefer LDC to SDC. I'd actually like to get ahold of a couple TC-251 to hear how they sound.
I uploaded a sample of the B1's in X/Y in this room here recently.

At rack recording: a 2-3db boost above 8k would likely get you there on these

I havn't looked at the response curves for the Fatheads, but most ribbon mics start to drop dramatically above 5k, so there isn't much of anything above 8k to boost.

My drum room is much different than the one described and I use SD condenser mic's overhead so the drums sound much different than they do in this recording, however the engineer said that this set up did work in his tracking and that's what really counts! ;)

Question: Were the two Fat Heads the only mics used for this recording?
Thanks

No, fatheads were overhead, Kick was AKG D112, snare was MXL V69, toms were SP B1s.
