Flexwand vs 3 Zigma CHI - Drum OH A/B Comparison
rackrecording | Mar 21, 2009 | 3,780 Views | ShareDescription
We compared two new small cardioid models (the Earthworks Flexwand and the 3 Zigma CHI SD-C) as drum overhead mics on a DW Drum Kit. The recordings were done on a single drum take with one of each model in the same place above the drumset. In each recording you are hearing only a single overhead microphone (nothing on kick, snare, toms, etc.) so it's not meant to be a complete drum sound. Just comparing overhead mics here. There was absolutely no processing done on either track except matching the volumes and then converting each track to 320 MP3.

Definitely more sparkly in the Earthworks mic, it made the ride come to life. Didn't sound hyped, either. The Zigma was alright but didn't move me. I wonder how it sounds in stereo?By tenchijin on Mar 23, 2009 at 2:57 pm

Yeah, the Flexwand has more sparkle, but the 3 Zigma is more neutral, more like my drums actually sound in the room. I like them both for different reasons.By rackrecording on Apr 13, 2009 at 10:00 pm

The inherent design of the CHI System is to have nearly transparent (nearly color-less) Small Diameter and Very Colorful Large Diameter Capsules. If you want to have Drum OH Leap out at you, try a C-Lol-12 or C-Lol-251 as a Stereo Pair for all but the loudest Drum O/H Applications. CHI is a big Crayon Box !!!By Larry V on Aug 7, 2009 at 5:00 pm

Listen to the low end, the kick and lower freq of the snare. Big difference with the 2 mics.By basskev on Aug 10, 2009 at 5:24 pm
